Now that you are retired, you have the time to finally do the things you’ve been dreaming about! Many Americans share that they’d love to spend their golden years vacationing. Here are a few travel ideas for retirees to consider.
Go Where Your Interests Take You
While keeping a budget in mind, you should plan at least one dream vacation that takes you to a location filled with things that excite you. Think of the basics, do you like exploring the outdoors? Or do prefer relaxing in the sun? If you prefer to spend your time hiking in the fresh air, try hot vacation destinations like Iceland, which has some of the most breathtaking landscapes in the world and numerous camping options within designated areas. For a warmer climate in the ocean, try the Caribbean, where there are numerous different islands to soak up the sun on white sand beaches.
Stay Within the States and Road Trip
You don’t have to go overseas to have a fantastic vacation. America is vast and filled with unique charm from corner to corner. Visit some great American cities by taking a cross-country road trip. Or opt for a train ride if you’d rather not drive. Try picking “themes” to give your trip direction How about a road trip across the U.S., stopping in each city to try its staple cuisine? Think pizza in New York City; hot dogs and Italian beef in Chicago; shrimp gumbo and rice in New Orleans; or barbecue in Kansas City.
Take a Cruise
If you’re looking for the ultimate in relaxation, you can’t go wrong with a cruise. Boarding a luxury liner for an all-inclusive getaway is a terrific way to see some amazing places in all the style and comfort you could ask for. A cruise vacation means everything will be taken care of for you, including food and entertainment. Cruises are available to all types of destinations such as the Caribbean, the Mediterranean, Alaska and more. Look for budget packages at the various cruise companies, and make sure to check for senior discounts!
Visit a Wonder of the World
There are some unbelievable places in the world that you should visit if you haven’t. The Great Pyramid of Giza in Egypt, the Grand Canyon, Machu Picchu, the Taj Mahal, the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Colosseum in Rome, Mount Rushmore in South Dakota, the hot springs at Yellowstone National Park – these places represent just a small sampling of some of the incredible monuments and vistas waiting for you to see.
Escape to Paradise
If you’re looking for a romantic, tropical vacation, you need to get away to the islands. Most people immediately think of Hawaii, with its beautiful sunsets, opulent resorts, lush culture and volcano hikes, but there are many more spectacular islands you can visit. The Galapagos, Bora Bora, Tahiti or Fiji are all special places with striking natural wonders, forests and beautiful beaches.
Discover Your History
Another great idea for traveling in your retirement is to visit the countries of your heritage. Spend some time researching your roots to find out where your ancestors come from. You may find a family home that’s still standing, or even discover relatives you’ve never met.
Enjoy your retirement by having an escape here and there. Consider some of these options, and fully embrace your wanderlust.
